Recreation and Museums
This indoor play
area is located right here in Randolph on Middlebury Blvd. It
features a soft play unit for jumping, climbing, and sliding and a
large matted area for tumbling, building, and "just getting the
sillies out." There is also a cafe serving simple lunch
fare and snacks.
Imagine That! -
Florham Park
This children's
museum features interactive exhibits where children are encouraged
to touch, discover, learn and explore. Featured exhibits
include a real fire truck, a space shuttle, a kitchen, and a
doctor's office. It is located on Vreeland Avenue in Florham
Park, in the Heller Building.
Community
Children's Museum - Dover
This
hands-on museum delivers interactive fun for children. Here,
children can step into a life-sized painting, or play make-believe
in a full-sized lake house. They can also weave a giant loom,
create portraits, and sculpt with clay, among other things.
The museum is located on Blackwell Street in Dover.
Wiggles and Giggles -
East Hanover
This
facility offers a full schedule of classes that are structured with
age-specific activities including circle time, music, and physical
activities. There are open play times available in the
schedule as well. This facility is located on Route 10 West on
the second floor of the FunPlex building.
Chuck E. Cheese - East
Hanover
This
indoor play area features climbing structures and arcade-style games
and rides for kids of all ages. Menu items include pizza,
sandwiches, and desserts, to name a few. The location closest
to Randolph is on Route 10 East in East Hanover, right next to the
Loew's Theater complex.
Morris
Museum - Morristown
Located
on Normandy Heights Road right next door in Morristown, this museum
features both permanent and changing exhibits. It also offers
special events for all ages and all interests, from hands-on arts
and science programs to theatrical and musical performances.
To get there from Randolph, take Hanover Avenue until it ends at
Whippany Road. Turn right onto Whippany Road, and take your
first left onto Normandy Heights Road. The entrance to the
museum is on the right.

RANDOLPH
This park is
located on Carrell Road between Millbrook and Center Grove Roads.
It features an enclosed toddler's playground, tennis courts,
basketball courts, playing fields, and a skate park.
Freedom Park
Built in 2000,
this park is located on Millbrook Avenue between Schoolhouse and
Carrell Roads. Facilities include an enclosed playground,
swings, and a volleyball court that doubles as a sandbox.
Older kids play soccer and baseball on the park's lighted fields,
and a large covered pavilion is available for picnics.
Hedden
Park
This
park is part of the Morris County Parks system. It is
accessible via entrances off Reservoir Avenue, Randolph Avenue, or
Route 46. The park features hiking and biking trails, fishing,
lakes for skating and fishing, and play areas. And feeding the
ducks is always a kid pleaser!
CHATHAM
Castle Park
From Morristown, take South Street (124) and make a left onto
Madison Avenue at the light after the Kings Supermarket. Turn
right onto Loantaka Way. Go straight at the light at Woodlawn
Avenue and turn left onto Shunpike Road. After passing by the
stores, the park is on the right. This park is not very shaded
but kids really love the wooden castles. Though it is not very
easy to supervise younger children in the climbers, there are swings
and "outside" climbers that are easily accessible.
The park is fenced with no gates and close to the parking lot.
CHESTER
Grove Street Park
Go to Main Street (old Route 24) in Chester. Make a left onto
Grove Street across from the Publick House (this has changed hands
several times in the past few years, so it may have a new name).
The park is about 2 blocks down on the right and is set back a bit
from the road. There are climbers, swings, picnic tables, sand
boxes and more.
DENVILLE
Gardner Field
The park is the premier recreational facility of Denville, featuring
playing fields, walking paths, a pavilion, and an award-winning
children's playground. It is located on Savage Road in
Denville, near the intersection of Routes 80 and 46. It is
directly across the street from the Burger King and Charlie Brown
restaurants, where Franklin Road intersects Route 46.
LAKE HIAWATHA
Volunteer's Park
Take
Route 46 East and make a left onto North Beverwyck. Just after
the residential area and before the grocery store, turn right.
There are signs for Volunteer's Park, which is located behind the
Volunteer Fire Department. This is a great park for ages 4 and
up. There is no fence and therefore harder to watch the kids.
There are tables and restrooms available.
LONG VALLEY
Rocky Top at Schooley's Mountain
Take old Route 24 through Chester past Route 206 and Chubb Field
into Long Valley. After the Valley Professional Center on the
left, make a right the next light onto Schooley's Mountain Road
(Routes 517/124) and follow up to Schooley's Mountain Inn. The
park is across from the Inn on the right. It is not fenced-in
but is far from the road and parking area. There are climbers
for all ages, swings, slides, sandpit, and more. There is a
shaded picnic pavilion with tables, a soccer field, baseball
diamonds, and bathrooms.
MENDHAM
Ralston Park
This park is
located behind Wysong Field on Route 24 in Mendham. Heading
away from Mendham on Route 24 towards Chester, it is located on the
left side of the road behind a pale yellow fire house after passing
Ironia Road on the right and Roxiticus Road on the left. The
enclosed playground includes a soft-surface toddler play area that
is separated from the equipment for the older children. There
is also a sandbox which is usually fully-stocked with pails, shovels
and other sand toys.
MONTVILLE
Montville Community Park
Take Route 287 to Exit 45. At the second stop sign, turn right
onto Vreeland Avenue. Follow all the way down (stay left at
the fork). Turn right onto River Road. At the light,
turn left onto Changebridge Road, and the park is on the right.
This is a newer park with all the latest playground equipment.
There are very large separate areas for toddlers (with soft ground
cover), preschoolers, and older kids. There are lots of slides
and climbers, and the park is fenced-in. A gazebo with tables
offers shade. Bathrooms and water fountains are available.
This park is very popular so it gets very busy.
MORRIS PLAINS
Morris Plains Community Park
Take Route 10 to Route 202 South (where the Kohl's is located).
Turn left onto Malapardis, and then right onto Jim Fear. The
playground is across from the school and features lots of things to
do. There is a sand box, slides, climbers, swings, teeter
totters and lots of pinic tables. There is a lake that is
located a safe distance from the playground and lots of trees.
MORRISTOWN and MORRIS TOWNSHIP
This county park
features playing fields, a Saturn Playground and picnic facilities.
There is also a paved path suitable for bikes and strollers, and a
lake that is home to various birds, including geese and herons.
The entrance to the park is located at the south end of South
Street, almost at the end. You'll pass the Horse Farm on your
left and immediately after the pasture is the parking lot for the
playground.
Lewis
Morris County Park - Morristown
The
main mom attraction here is the Saturn Playgrounds next to Doe
Meadow in the center of the park. Other features include
hiking trails, playing fields, picnic areas, a lake, and areas for
sledding in the winter. From Randolph, take Route 24 towards
Morristown and look for the park sign on your right. As you
enter, the parks maintenance garage is at the entrance on your
right. Go up the hill and the play area is on the left almost
at the very top.
MOUNT TABOR
Mount Tabor Park
Take Route 10 East to Route 53 North. After the 1st light,
make a right onto Country Club Road. Follow the road into
Mount Tabor Country Club. The playground is on the left,
parking is on the grass. This is a small, tree-covered
playground with a climber, spring-rockers, baby swings, regular
swings, a paved basketball court and a few picnic tables, but no
restroom facilities.
MOUNTAIN LAKES
Lakeland Hills YMCA Playground
Take Route 46 to the Boulevard, which is across from the Evergreen
Caterers. Go roughly two miles and make a right onto Fanny
Road, just before a large medical building sign. The YMCA is a
few hundred yards on the right and the playground is in the back.
It is small but completely fenced-in. There is a separate,
fenced-in sand pit, nature trails, rocks to climb and tables for
lunch. No restroom facilities.
Midvale Park
Take Route 46 to Cherry Hill Road. Take the jug handle to
Intervale Road. After about 5 miles the road will split, stay
to your left which is Midvale. The park entrance is on the
right and not very noticeable, so go slowly. This park has a
nice climber, bucket and regular swings, spring rides and a nice
playing field. But the parking is poor and there are no picnic
tables or restroom facilities.
PARSIPPANY
Manor Park
Take 202 North past Route 46. The Parsippany Municipal
Buildings will be on your right along with 287. After passing
about 5 streets, turn left onto Bell Road and the park is on the
right. There are swings, climbers, slides, picnic tables, and
lots of shade.
Mountain Way Park
From Route 10 take South Powder Mill Plaza Road to the end.
Make a left onto Mountain Way and the park is 1/2 mile on the right.
The park is in a sunny location and features 2 climbers, baby
swings, regular swings, spring-rockers, a gazebo and benches around
the playground.
Powdermill Park
Take Route 10 East and use the jughandle after the light at
Powdermill Plaza to turn left onto Powdermill Road. Turn left
onto Bahama, then right onto Waterloo Drive and the park is on the
left. This is a great little park that is never busy.
There is climbing equipment, swings, a merry-go-round, and picnic
tables, but no restrooms. There is also a little brook that
runs along the back.
ROXBURY
Castle Park
Other names for
this park include Horseshoe Lake Park and the Imagination
Station. There is a large wooden castle structure that
kids love to explore, as well as swings and a paved trail suitable
for bikes and strollers. The playground is located at the
corner of Eyland and Righter Roads on the right side of the Roxbury
Municipal Offices near the soccer fields. Take Route 10 West.
After you pass Suburban Furniture on your right, take the jughandle
after the next light to turn left onto Eyland Avenue. You'll
pass Horseshoe Lake on your left, and then you'll see the Municipal
Building. Turn into the Municipal Building parking lot, and
you'll see the playground on your right. You can also park at
the lot near the soccer fields on Righter Road and then walk to the
playground.
WHIPPANY
Bee Meadow
Take Route 10 to
Troy Hills Road (at Molly Malone's Restaurant). Turn left at
the first light onto Highland, then right at the T-intersection onto
Reynolds Avenue. Take the first left past Bee Meadow Pond onto
Pond Road. The playground is a few hundred yards on the right.
Or take Route 46 to Route 202 South which turns into Parsippany
Road. After the light at North Jefferson, turn left onto Bee
Meadow Parkway. At the blinking light, turn right onto
Reynolds and then take the third right onto Pond Road to the
playground. There are two fenced-in playgrounds separated for
2-5 year olds and 5-9 year olds. There is a picnic table, but
no restroom facilities.
PARK SYSTEMS

Randolph
Park - Randolph
This lake is the municipal swimming facility. It is located
off of Route 10 West on Green Lane, behind the Black River Barn.
Refreshments and a changing room are available, and there is a
toddler playground.
West Morris YMCA - Randolph
You and your
children can enroll in one of the many swim classes offered by the
Randolph YMCA. The facility is located north of Route 10 on
Canfield Avenue.

and Cinemas
Theatrical
and musical performances for all age groups. To get there from
Randolph, take Hanover Avenue until it ends at Whippany Road.
Turn right onto Whippany Road, and take your first left onto
Normandy Heights Road. The entrance to the museum and theater
is on the right.
Brundage
Playhouse - Randolph
Located
in Brundage Park across from the Tennis Courts, this theater right
here in Randolph puts on a wide variety of performances including
children's shows. Theater classes are also available for
students from Kindergarten right through high school. The
playhouse also offers summer camp programs.
Community Theater -
Morristown
This
theater was newly restored in the mid-1990's after years of neglect.
It has since become one of the hottest venues in the area and
showcases an incredible variety of today's top talent. Patrons
can attend musical performances by big bands, rock bands, or
orchestras. Comedy performances, live plays, and children's
programs are also among the offerings. The theater is located
on the corner of South Street and Pine Street.
This
playhouse often puts on magical productions of children's stories
geared specifically for viewing by little eyes. The
castle-shaped theater overlooks Budd Lake and is located on Lake
Shore Drive.
Reel Moms at
Loew's Cinemas - East Hanover
Parents
are encouraged to bring their babies to the movies during Reel Mom
showings at Loew's Cinemas. Lights are dimmed as opposed to
extinguished, and sound levels are reduced. The location
closest to Randolph is on Route 10 East in East Hanover.

Week at the Theater
[+]Zoos,
Farms and Outdoor Education
Alstede Farms is
a local farm market featuring farm animals, pick-your-own crops, a
giant hay bale pyramid for climbing, picnic tables, and more. It is located on Route 24,
about 2 miles west of Route 206.
Bergen County
Zoological Park (Van Saun) - Paramus
This is a
well-maintained zoo and features a train that runs around the
grounds and a full-sized carousel. There is a snack pavilion
and also a playground with areas containing play equipment designed
for different age groups.
Fosterfields
Living Historical Farm
Fosterfields is a
working farm, employing tools, techniques and materials of a late
nineteenth-century farm. The farm offers educational
activities and demonstrations of Victorian era farm life.
Visitors are encouraged to participate in various activities
including feeding the chickens, churning butter, and tending the
garden. Located on Kahdena Road in Morristown.
Frelinghuysen
Arboretum
The woodlands,
meadows, and beautiful gardens at the Arboretum are an ideal
location for a leisurely nature walk with the kids. The park
features educational programs, guided nature hikes, and a gift shop.
It is located across from the Morris County Library on Hanover
Avenue in Morristown.
Great Swamp
Outdoor Education Center
The GSOEC has been providing fun and educational programs for over
40 years. The 40-acre facility features environmental displays
and classrooms, as well as 2 miles of walking trails for nature
hikes and observation. Take I-287 South to the Madison Ave.
exit and stay left. At light turn left onto Rt. 24 east. Follow 24
until you enter Town of Madison. Go under small railroad bridge. At
second light turn right onto Green Village Rd. Pass 3 lights and
continue straight for 1 mile. Look for the Great Swamp sign on right and
turn right into driveway.
Space Farms Zoo and Museum
Starting out as a
General Store, repair shop and animal shelter, this facility has
become the state's largest combined zoo and museum. In
addition to the main attractions, there is also an old-fashioned
country store, playgrounds, miniature golf, a family restaurant and
a gift shop.
Stony Hill
Farm Market - Chester
This local
favorite is on North Road in Chester near the intersection with
Route 24. It features farm animals to entertain the
kids.
Sun
High Orchards
This farm market
is located right here in Randolph south of Route 10 on
Canfield Avenue. There are animals for the kids to visit and
feed, and sheltered picnic tables are provided. Snacks, drinks and baked goods are available in
the market in addition to fresh local farm harvest, of course!
Turtleback Zoo -
West Orange
Located on
Northfield Avenue, this zoo houses a large variety of animals and
habitats. There is also a petting zoo, and train and pony
rides.
